Pants or not pants?

Walking through the halls in high school you see lots of different styles. High school is a time to express yourself and to be and show who you are to the world and just hope that people will accept you. Looking around you question a lot of things that people are wearing, trying not to judge but we all know we do, even I do. Everyones style is unique and different then yours but yet if its not to our liking suddenly we don't like the person as much or see them in a different way. Its such a problem in our society but yet we all continue to do it anyways. Somethings that I know I probably get judged for most is that I think leggings are pants. This has been a debated for a while now and people have very strong opinions on this subject. It seems like such a silly opinion to have but yet I get so heated about it when it gets brought up so I feel that I should cover this topic since it is so important to me.
If leggings aren't pants what are they then? What is there purpose? Leggings just like sweats and jeans cover your whole bottom, hips and legs if they are fitting right. This means they are covering the same amount of area as jeans or sweats and much more area then if you were to wear shorts, a skirt or a dress ever would. I also have repetitively pondered what their purpose would be if they weren't pants. You can't wear them under a dress or shouldn't at least in my opinion. That was the style like 8 years ago when I was little and would have the matching set and it came together, I know you know what I am talking about girls. Now we have tights for things like that so why would I use leggings for what I should be using tights for. You could say that I wear leggings quite often and I would not deny maybe even more often then I should, but they are very comfy in my defense and easy to match with. I own about 8 pairs of just solid black leggings for my everyday wardrobe because they are so plain, simple and cheap. There are so many good things about leggings that I feel they are more beneficial then negative in any way. They are the in between of sweat pants and jeans, so you don't look like a total slob but you also can be more comfy then jeans are. You can also dress them up with a nicer shirt and accessories or dress it down with a crew neck or sweatshirt of something in the range of clothing item. People have told me to buy yoga pants from places like Victoria Secret because they are thicker then leggings but they are also about $40 more then leggings from like Forever 21 and just as cheaply made and can get holes in them just as quick. There are also tons and tons of super cute patterned leggings out there right now which makes them seems more think or some are even made thicker. Leggings overall are a great basic thing to wear and easy to make look fabulous on a daily basis.
I will admit that there are some negative things that people have mentioned to me that I can see some points they make. Leggings are not always meant for everyone and that people need to be sure that they are wearing the right size leggings when you wear them. If they are to small or are starting to get old they get very thin and worn out and that is something people don't want to see that. You also shouldn't wear leggings with extremely short shirts like crop tops to places like school specially. If you raise your hand in class and your stomach shows a little fine but if you are coming to school with your bellybutton showing with leggings that looks especially inappropriate. You need to make sure that you are wearing leggings in a appropriate way in public.
So I hope you can see where I am coming from when I say that leggings are pants and that is really their only purpose. They are also easy to match with, comfy and affordable which makes them even better! I understand some people wear them inappropriately which needs to change but enough people wear them the right way so we should let it happen. Leggings cover up just as much as other pants so why can't we let them be pants?
